"Echa w czasie: Recontextualization as Musical Memory in Chopin's Mazurkas" - MA Thesis
2025
This thesis examines the validity of memory as a framework for understanding Chopin’s mazurkas and is organized into two primary sections: 1) Mazurkas & Memory and 2) Inter-opus Memories. Part I: Mazurkas & Memory acts as a brief literature review, establishing the relevance of memory as a framework for understanding Chopin’s mazurkas by drawing on work from the areas of music performance, musicology, and music theory. Part II: Inter-opus Memories presents two analytical case studies, examining the connections between mazurkas from different opuses which facilitate hearing them as memories of each other.
The full text of the thesis is currently available through McGill's escholarship platform.

The paper Kobiece Kroki: Expressions of Gender & Voice in Chopin’s Mazurkas begins by examining the ways in which the mazurkas depict feminine dance gestures. It then extends this gendered reading of these pieces to relationships between different numbers, demonstrating the way in which Op. 17 No. 4 can be understood as a feminization of musical material that originally appeared as masculine in Op. 6 No. 3.
